Meet the Characters
Kathryn Walker
Background: Originally a nurse from modern England, Kathryn Walker finds herself unexpectedly transported into a mystical 12th-century Chinese world of cultivation and ancient sects.
Personality: Kathryn is practical, resilient, and curious, with a strong preference for an orderly life. She is accustomed to relying only on herself and a select few friends she trusts. Her modern sensibilities often clash with the customs of the martial universe, creating both challenges and opportunities.
Journey: Trapped in the body of Wen Zhi Ji, a high-ranking male cultivator, Kathryn is determined to protect Wen Zhi Ji's life and reputation while searching for a way back to her familiar reality. She often chooses actions based on what she believes Wen Zhi Ji would do, even when it frightens her. Her empathy and care for human life guide her actions in the violent cultivation world, which often conflicts with her modern ethical perspective. Despite the dangers, Kathryn remains steadfast in her principles, striving to preserve human life and uphold integrity. Her journey is one of self-discovery, courage, and inner strength, as she navigates a world full of magic and peril.
Wen Zhi Ji
Background: Wen Zhi Ji is a high-ranking cultivator from a prestigious righteous sect. Known for his dedication to preserving the sect's library, he spends much of his time in the outside world, officially searching for rare manuscripts. However, his true motivations remain mysterious, suggesting a personal agenda that extends beyond his sect’s official duties. Wen Zhi Ji serves as the host body for Kathryn Walker, who finds herself navigating his life and reputation after being transported to his world.
Personality: Wen Zhi Ji is a principled and ethical cultivator who, similarly to Kathryn, values human life. Unlike many of his peers, he is broad-minded and does not automatically view demonic sects as evil, seeking evidence of wrongdoing before taking action. His commitment to protecting the innocent and fighting evil is balanced with a reluctance to kill casually. Wen Zhi Ji's unique perspective and compassion for others set him apart, as he prioritizes confronting supernatural threats over sectarian divides.
Wang Xiaobo
Background: Wang Xiaobo is Wen Zhi Ji’s only disciple and the senior disciple of the Library Court. As a young adult in his late teens, he holds significant responsibilities within the sect, managing the library during his master's frequent absences. Despite his young age, Wang Xiaobo is respected for his diligence and intelligence, although some view him as lagging in cultivation due to Wen Zhi Ji's prolonged periods away from the sect.
Personality: Wang Xiaobo is loyal, polite, and obedient, demonstrating unwavering dedication to his master. His relationship with Wen Zhi Ji resembles that of a father and son. Wang Xiaobo’s talent and diligence are evident in how he manages many of his master’s duties, yet he remains humble and supportive. For Kathryn, he is a trusted ally, providing crucial information that helps her to navigate the martial world. Despite their close interactions, he remains oblivious to any changes in Wen Zhi Ji’s behavior, never troubling Kathryn with suspicions and showing no signs of noticing anything amiss.
Hong Junjie
Background: Hong Junjie is Wen Zhi Ji’s closest friend. As the sect leader's senior disciple and right hand, he serves as the de facto deputy leader, assisting in the day-to-day management and strategic decisions of the sect. Renowned as one of the most powerful cultivators of his generation, Hong is widely regarded as a potential future sect leader.
Personality: Hong Junjie embodies the ideal of a righteous cultivator, demonstrating exceptional leadership skills, a warm personality, and a good sense of humor. He is adept at resolving conflicts and inspiring those around him. His loyalty to Wen Zhi Ji is unwavering, and he stands by his friend in every situation, offering support even when he disagrees with Wen Zhi Ji’s actions. However, Hong Junjie holds a strict view of righteousness, often lacking the broad-minded tolerance of his friend. He believes firmly in the principles of Taoist cultivation and is less accepting of deviations from these ideals, maintaining a clear line between righteousness and the corruption of unorthodox practices.
Mu Yongzheng
Background: As the adopted son of the sect leader's late younger brother and a member of the Mu family, Mu Yongzheng holds the influential position as the Warden of Turbulent Currents. This role places him in charge of demon-hunting affairs, granting him a status within the sect hierarchy comparable to that of a court leader. His relationship with Wen Zhi Ji is marked by tension and rivalry.
Personality: Mu Yongzheng is known for his suspicious nature, particularly when it comes to potential demonic influences. His dedication to demon-hunting and eliminating demonic cultivators makes him vigilant and wary of anything that seems amiss. This suspicion extends to Wen Zhi Ji, whose recent behaviors have caught Mu's attention. Unlike others in the sect, Mu scrutinizes Wen Zhi Ji’s actions, convinced that something is wrong. He believes Wen Zhi Ji might be under demonic possession or possibly allied with Murong Yaozu, a former friend who turned to the dark path.
Murong Yaozu
Background: Murong Yaozu, once a righteous cultivator and a close friend of Wen Zhi Ji, is now the leader of the Silver Crescent Moon Sect, a demonic sect notorious for its use of illusions and necromancy. Previously, he was known as a wanderer who traveled the world, helping people against demonic threats. However, his choice to step onto the demonic path and lead the unorthodox sect marked a significant divergence from Wen Zhi Ji's path. Their story of friendship turned to rivalry has become a popular tale among teahouse storytellers.
Personality: Despite his allegiance to a demonic sect, Murong Yaozu maintains a low profile and generally refrains from committing the typical atrocities associated with evil cultivators. He is recognized as intelligent and reasonable, often avoiding unnecessary conflicts with humans and the righteous community. He continues to regard Wen Zhi Ji as a friend, appreciating his broad-mindedness and understanding of the complexities beyond the simple dichotomy of right and wrong.
